Title: The Giving Guide: Small Ways to Make a Big Difference
In a Chinese province near the Tibetan border, two women -- one from Hong Kong, the other from Taiwan -- are helping thousands of yak herders build a better life for their families through a new social enterprise called Shokay..."There are so many entrepreneurs in the region," says Ms. So. "People really need to challenge themselves and rethink philanthropy. It's a matter of combining elements: really understanding a social problem, finding a social need, and thinking of innovative and sustainable ways to do it."

Title: SMALL BUSINESS MATTERS: Co.'s `social' talk not just yakkin'
The advantage they have is that knitting is undergoing a renaissance as a new generation discovers the ancient art. Although few may realize there is such a thing as yak yarn, this new wave of knitters is keenly interested in exotic fibers. Yak yarn is comparable to cashmere, according to those who have knit with it, and it is machine washable.

Title: Social Fabric
SHOKAY: It's a little known fact, but yak undercoats actually rival cashmere, alpaca and vicuna for softness. And though yak fiber is almost exclusively used by Tibetan nomads at present, that may change if a group of young Harvard grads succeeds in raising the material's profile. Their vehicle is Shokay, a brand of scarves, throws and knitting yarns made from yak fiber sourced from poor Tibetan herder communities. A portion of the profits goes back to the herders to fund health, education and other development projects. Stay warm, and do good, by visiting shokay.com.
