Defining social entrepreneurship
Why China?

Why China?

The Need & Opportunity

  • Entrepreneurship and private sector growth has been the engine for China’s economic development
  • Participation of poor communities in the private sector growth has been limited
  • Serious social ills exacerbated by widening income inequality, environmental degradation and loss of social safety net
Despite the need and opportunity, social entrepreneurship is still at its infant stages in China due to the following binding constraints:
  • Poor understanding of the concept
  • Lack of home-grown examples
  • Lack of capital
  • Lack of expertise
